How much fun?
The coolest little kayak shop in Canada!
We Hobie'd across the Juan de Fuca and BACK on a November day! Thanks to Al from Reel Excitment Fishing Charters
for being our support boat, local Coast Guard Aux. unit 37 for keeping
us safe from whales, cargo ships & US Navy submarines and
[www.DiscoverSooke.com] for this footage of the crossing there!
I am attempting to catalog ID each and record the seals that keep us company here at our private docks.
This afternoon Sooke Coastal Explorations (www.sookewhalewatching.com)gave us a report that whales were at Sheringham Point heading towards Sooke. Jason from www.DiscoverSooke.com and I decided to head out in a couple of hobie kayaks from Sooke Harbour Resort and Marina (www.sookeharbourmarina.ca) to try and view them. After gathering equipment and organising Russ as a back-up boat, marine radio, GPS and logging the route etc, we set off and 45 min later we were in among the Otter Point / Secretary Island line waiting to see if our luck would hold. And 10-15 min later.. WOW! Amazing, Awesome and Humbling... 20 odd animals from "L" pod spread out over a km diamater area came right for us, next to, in front, behind and UNDER us... all around... and ALL on VIDEO! Watch this - you will love it!!
I would like to point out that to purposly place yourself in the direct path of an endangered species (of which these Orcas are) is an offense punishable by law. There are strict guidlines on www.straitwatch.org for viewing whales.
Due to the speed the weather can change in this region West Coast Outdoor Adventure Rentals does not recommend their kayaks are taken into the Strait. - There is plenty to see and explore within the Harbour and Basin area!
